Monkey See

Hendrik, thinking that he hears a knock at the front door, runs towards it:

"I'll get it!"

"Coming!  Coming!"

"Come'on in!"

"Oh no!  Man all gone!  See ya later, man!"

We have decided to make a tradition of doing our family gifts on Sinterklaas rather than on Christmas. This year we missed the date by 10 days, but let's be honest - we could have done it in January and the kids would be none-the-wiser this year! ;)

Hendrik got a motorbike ("Moany-cycle" or "morning-bike") for Sinterklaas this year. He loves riding it, loves taking Peetew for rides on it. Anneke got love and cuddles for Sinterklaas. Brian got a big boy shaving kit, and I got tickets to Stuart McLean's Vinyl Cafe Christmas Show. It was so. Good.

Life According to Hendent

Me: (Attempting to cut H's nails last week) "Don't worry, mommy won't hurt you!"
H: (Every day since then, randomly): "Mommy Hurt You.  Mommy Hurt You!"

Hendrik knows that Daddy's name is Brian (You can often hear him yelling, "Puppy!  Byan!  Puppy! Go Byan!"), so he's a little confused when when I call him Hendrik Brian...

Me: (Singing) Anneke Jacoba!
H: Akke Coba!
M: Hendrik Brian!
H: Hendent Byan!
M: Anneke Jacoba! Hendrik Brian!
H: Akke Coba!  Peetew Byan!
M: Hendrik Brian!
H: Mommy Byan!
M: Hendrik Brian!
H: Daddy Byan!
M: Hendrik Brian!
H: Peetew Byan!
Me: Je
H: Je
M: m'a
H: m'a
M: pelle
H: pelle
M: Hendrik
H: Hendent
M: Je m'appelle Hendrik
H: Mommytell Hendent
M: Je m'appelle Hendrik
H: Mommabelle Hendent
M: Je m'appelle Hendrik
H: Izbelle Hendent
M: Oh, nevermind.
H: Oh mommymind.

It's been a busy fall. It's been filled with love and remembering and sleepless nights and laughter and impatience and lots and lots and LOTS of talking (guess who?) and family and not as much time with friends as we'd like and colds and flus and kindness....

I'm starting to climb out of the fog, now, and I thought I'd just post a little update of the little lady's first 2.5 months. Hendrik has been listening to a LOT of Psalty (he has all 10 Kid's Praise albums on his mp3 player...), hence the music choice....

Introducing: Anneke Jacoba

One week ago today, we welcomed the newest member of our family, Anneke Jacoba.  She arrived 8 days early, and weighed in at 8lbs 1oz at 20.5" long.  It was a fairly fast labour and delivery, but not quite as fast as Hendrik's.  From start to finish, it was almost exactly 7 hours (I woke up at 5:15am, and she was born at 12:08pm).  Our midwives, Shannon and Georgia, were great and supportive, and we had a much more positive interaction with the nurses (except for one) at the hospital this time.
First hours of life with daddy.
Anneke received quite a bit of attention from the Pediatric staff at St Joe's because her breathing seemed to be somewhat laboured, but within 12 hours of birth it had almost all cleared up and just before the 24 hour mark, we were cleared to go home.
My two babies.
When we found out that we were expecting with Hendrik, Anneke was the first name that we chose for a girl, and it only took us about 10 minutes to decide that, so we were pleased to be able to use it this time!  Brian's Oma vanOosten was an Anneke, and my mom's oldest sister, who was somewhat of a 'grandma' to me since my grandma was quite a bit older than most of my friends' grandmas, is an Anne. Jacoba is Brian's mom's middle name, and my dad, of course, is Jacob.
Grandma and her second granddaughter!
Hendrik seems to be resigned to the fact that there is now a baby living in his house, but he is already starting to act out more in order get some attention, though I do try to give him as much positive attention as possible.  Hopefully the transition won't be too long, but I can see that we're about to enter the 2-year old stage, and I'm just not sure if I'm up for that yet!  ;)  It is understandable that he is out of sorts, though:  New baby + less mommy + new teeth + new room + approaching 2 years old = a force to be reckoned with!
