We have decided to make a tradition of doing our family gifts on Sinterklaas rather than on Christmas. This year we missed the date by 10 days, but let's be honest - we could have done it in January and the kids would be none-the-wiser this year! ;)

Hendrik got a motorbike ("Moany-cycle" or "morning-bike") for Sinterklaas this year. He loves riding it, loves taking Peetew for rides on it. Anneke got love and cuddles for Sinterklaas. Brian got a big boy shaving kit, and I got tickets to Stuart McLean's Vinyl Cafe Christmas Show. It was so. Good.

Life According to Hendent

Me: (Attempting to cut H's nails last week) "Don't worry, mommy won't hurt you!"
H: (Every day since then, randomly): "Mommy Hurt You.  Mommy Hurt You!"

Hendrik knows that Daddy's name is Brian (You can often hear him yelling, "Puppy!  Byan!  Puppy! Go Byan!"), so he's a little confused when when I call him Hendrik Brian...

Me: (Singing) Anneke Jacoba!
H: Akke Coba!
M: Hendrik Brian!
H: Hendent Byan!
M: Anneke Jacoba! Hendrik Brian!
H: Akke Coba!  Peetew Byan!
M: Hendrik Brian!
H: Mommy Byan!
M: Hendrik Brian!
H: Daddy Byan!
M: Hendrik Brian!
H: Peetew Byan!
Me: Je
H: Je
M: m'a
H: m'a
M: pelle
H: pelle
M: Hendrik
H: Hendent
M: Je m'appelle Hendrik
H: Mommytell Hendent
M: Je m'appelle Hendrik
H: Mommabelle Hendent
M: Je m'appelle Hendrik
H: Izbelle Hendent
M: Oh, nevermind.
H: Oh mommymind.

It's been a busy fall. It's been filled with love and remembering and sleepless nights and laughter and impatience and lots and lots and LOTS of talking (guess who?) and family and not as much time with friends as we'd like and colds and flus and kindness....

I'm starting to climb out of the fog, now, and I thought I'd just post a little update of the little lady's first 2.5 months. Hendrik has been listening to a LOT of Psalty (he has all 10 Kid's Praise albums on his mp3 player...), hence the music choice....

Two weeks ago, Hendrik was "Hee-no". This week he is "Hendint". I wonder what next week will bring?

Introducing: Anneke Jacoba

One week ago today, we welcomed the newest member of our family, Anneke Jacoba.  She arrived 8 days early, and weighed in at 8lbs 1oz at 20.5" long.  It was a fairly fast labour and delivery, but not quite as fast as Hendrik's.  From start to finish, it was almost exactly 7 hours (I woke up at 5:15am, and she was born at 12:08pm).  Our midwives, Shannon and Georgia, were great and supportive, and we had a much more positive interaction with the nurses (except for one) at the hospital this time.
First hours of life with daddy.
Anneke received quite a bit of attention from the Pediatric staff at St Joe's because her breathing seemed to be somewhat laboured, but within 12 hours of birth it had almost all cleared up and just before the 24 hour mark, we were cleared to go home.
My two babies.
When we found out that we were expecting with Hendrik, Anneke was the first name that we chose for a girl, and it only took us about 10 minutes to decide that, so we were pleased to be able to use it this time!  Brian's Oma vanOosten was an Anneke, and my mom's oldest sister, who was somewhat of a 'grandma' to me since my grandma was quite a bit older than most of my friends' grandmas, is an Anne. Jacoba is Brian's mom's middle name, and my dad, of course, is Jacob.
Grandma and her second granddaughter!
Hendrik seems to be resigned to the fact that there is now a baby living in his house, but he is already starting to act out more in order get some attention, though I do try to give him as much positive attention as possible.  Hopefully the transition won't be too long, but I can see that we're about to enter the 2-year old stage, and I'm just not sure if I'm up for that yet!  ;)  It is understandable that he is out of sorts, though:  New baby + less mommy + new teeth + new room + approaching 2 years old = a force to be reckoned with!

More words!

Pretty much the minute that I wrote the last entry, Hendrik started saying new words.  These include:

Baby (beebee)
Thank you (teetuew)
Cheese (tsheee)
Bike (bye!)

It's amazing how quickly this goes!  He's also started repeating a LOT of words that I say, if I start with one or two that he already knows.

Almost 16 Months

At almost 16 months, Hendrik is growing up quickly!
 His vocab includes:
Daddy (most often pronounced "DAH-ddie"
Banana (nanana)
Um (only ever used when starting a "sentence" when no one is paying attention, or when pretending to talk on the phone.)
Beep beep beep!

His signing vocab includes:
Thank you
All done

Every morning after breakfast, hendrik asks for me to pick him up, then he waves to daddy and says, "yeah. Yeah. Yeah." meaning, of course, that he's ready to go to the babysitter's house. I love it that going to Erine's place is such a positive thing for him. His favourite thing in the world is to chase izzy with his ride on car (he pushes it like a shopping cart)and laugh hysterically as she scrambles out of the way. He's a funny little man and we love him always and like him most of the time. ;)

Mr Dress Up

Hendrik is frequently seen wandering around the house wearing his bike helmet or his (or my!) sunglasses.  The other day, however, he decided that he really needed a whole outfit: a sun hat, a rain coat, and mommy's sunglasses.  (Each item was brought to daddy with great solemness so that daddy could help him put them on.)

Mother's Day 2012

Mom came over for a visit again this year on Mother's Day, and she and Hendrik and I had a wonderful (though short - Hendrik wasn't really into it!) visit to the Royal Botanical Gardens to see and smell the lilacs!  We also went to a concert on the Saturday night featuring the Bach Elgar Choir (Brian's choir last year) and an Oakville Choir who performed a mega-vespers service in Russian and some other lovely pieces mostly in Latin.  Beautiful music!
What a blessing it is to be able to spend time with such a wonderful mom and Grandma!  Hendrik had a good time with Grandma, too.  He screamed when he dropped her off in nursery, which made Grandma feel very loved.  :)  Happy (belated) mother's day, mom!  We are blessed to have you in our lives!

These feet are made for walking....

Hendrik does not always walk all the time, but it is certainly becoming his preferred mode of transportation, especially on gravel and cement!  When we went to the park on Sunday morning, he walked the pathway from the playground to the baseball diamond - which is about the length of 1 full soccer field + a baseball diamond.

Fun in the Springtime!

Hendrik and I have been spending much of the time between when we get home and when he goes to bed outside.  I think he would live outside if he could, even though he won't crawl on grass or on the wood chips in the play ground, and he often walks on his knees on the driveway, and he gets slivers in his hands when he crawls on the deck.  Despite all of that, he loves the out doors.
At the park.
Hendrik watches in disappointment as Izzy drinks the whole puddle away.
Fun car/ball from his Van Breda cousins!
He LOVES to play fetch with Izzy.  SHE needs some encouragement to play with him.
Come back, tractor!

Spring has Sprung (for now)

Hendrik is thrilled to play outside in the nice weather.  Dirt, sticks, and water make life that much more fun!  While we are avid fans of winter here in this house, it's always thrilling to watch, feel, smell, and hear the seasons changing.  There's nothing quite like the smell of wet earth warming up, or like the sound of spring bird songs after a winter of silence, or like the feel of the warm sun on your face.  I know, winter's not over until it's over, and there will certainly be one or two more snowstorms yet before spring arrives for real, but this weather is a wonderful reminder that spring is on the way and that the gardens will soon be growing again!

Future Canada's Worst Handyman

Hendrik shows little aptitude for working (properly) with tools.

It's funny.  I've never encouraged Hendrik to play with any specific toy of his - in fact, I've hardly bought any toys for him - the ones we have are mostly a mix of hand-me downs from cousins and friends, with a few here are there that were freebies (or really good buys) from yard sales or mom to mom sales.

Despite this, Hendrik loves three things:  (1) Very much in first place, his Sleep Sheep.  When I let him take it out of his crib with him in the morning or after a nap, he drags it everywhere (by an ear or the tail, of course).  I've taken the sound box out of it because he would occasionally press one of the buttons during the night and when the ocean waves started crashing in his crib in the middle of the night, he'd wake up rather unhappy.  (2) A tiny little teddy bear with a pink scarf (and now a missing eye) that was handed out at a mom-to-mom sale by women who were trying to raise money for breast cancer.  He has two other little teddy bears, but neither of them have been deemed worthy of his love quite the way that this little bear has.  (3) Cars, buses, horses on wheels, and anything else that can be pushed along with a "bbbbbbbrrrrrrrrr" sound effect.  I don't know what his fascination with cars is, I think it must be an innate male characteristic - I'm not sure - neither Brina nor I have ever suggested in any play that cars and vehicles were more fun than Little People or Noah's Ark or stuffed caterpillars....  Maybe it has to do with the hours he's spent watching Top Gear with Brian, from the first day he was in this world.....

Hendrik and Daddy

So it's been a while since I've posted - almost 2 months! I've started babysitting two little boys, and that keeps my life pretty busy and tiring! I shall try to post some photos today of our growing little man (who is almost a year old!!).
Hendrik loves his sheep.
Hendrik has discovered the kitchen cupboards....
Hendrik makes our living room into an obstacle course, and goes over, under, or through anything he can.
